We all love a bit of the Beatles and this term we’ve been learning a medley of three of their hits: Ticket To Ride, Penny Lane and Drive My Car – all written by the legends that are Lennon and McCartney.

“Ticket To Ride” was recorded at EMI Studios in London and was the first Beatles record with a running time longer than 3 minutes. It stayed at number 1 in the UK chart for 3 weeks in 1965 and has been covered by artists including the Carpenters and the Bee Gees.

“Penny Lane”, released in 1967 was named after a street in Liverpool where John Lennon and Paul McCartney would meet to catch a bus into town. It was the first single to be sold with a picture sleeve in the UK.

The final part of our medley, “Drive My Car” was written in 1965 and featured on the album Rubber Soul. The story goes that Paul arrived at John Lennon’s house with the tune in his head, but was struggling with the lyrics. He got to work with John to rewrite them and once they had the “Drive My Car” lyric, it all started to flow….
