According to preliminary findings from a new pilot study by researchers at Iowa State University, one hour of singing with a group significantly reduced the so-called “stress hormone” cortisol and was correlated with reduced feelings of sadness and anxiety in those who suffer from Parkinson’s disease. Singing also appeared to improve motor functions and fluidity of movement in Parkinson’s patients.
I think all our choir members would agree with this article as we have a lot of fun at our weekly rehearsals, its very social and it gives everyone a lift. This TED talk video goes some way to explaining this and how it can help combat loneliness and mental health issues like Parkinson’s Disease (one of our supported charities this year).

It’s the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, as Keats wrote. Or the season of learning fabulous new songs and rehearsing for performances, as Jane might say!
Our choir had the honour to be performing at the Mayor’s Civic Honours event in Solihull, as well as at a wedding in Warwickshire this October, and now we are full steam ahead rehearsing for the festive season and next year’s Spring Sing!
November started with our Annual General Meeting and the choir members chose Admiral Nurses and Parkinson’s UK as the supported charities for 2018/19.
The season will finish with our “Family and Friends” concert in December when we’ll be presenting a generous cheque each to this past year’s charities – The Men’s Shed (Marie Cure Solihull) and The Dyspraxia Foundation.
So, it’s a busy and fun season ahead – and every member of the choir and committee will be playing an important part. Thank you all!
