Take Me Home Country Roads

One of Sing! Bentley Heath’s favourite songs this year is ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’.  A hymn to home, it’s an emotive and nostalgic song with images of the rivers and mountains in West Virginia. It will – we hope – touch the hearts of anyone who has ever longed for home and restful landscapes.

The original song-writers had planned to sell it to Johnny Cash, but after they played it to singer songwriter John Denver, he loved it and together they worked on the lyrics to create the song we know now.

It was first performed in December 1970, earning a five minute standing ovation for John Denver and his band, and then recorded in 1971. The record was a hit in many countries, reaching number 7 in the charts in the UK and is still popular today through digital downloads.

Cover versions have been recorded by a variety of stars including Olivia Newton-John, Ray Charles and Loretta Lynn.  We quite like these versions – the first in celebration of “The 50th Annual CMA Awards,” and featuring 30 CMA Award-winning acts – a who’s who of country music and the second – a reggae version.

With its lyrics celebrating the American rural landscape, this is one the choir’s choices from ‘Across the Pond’ in our 2018 SPRING SING!
